Web pages (the containers for web contents) are created using a Web programming language called Hypertext Markup Language (popularly known as HTML).
HTML is a web programming language that is used to create web pages, its properties and also format the texts found in web pages. HTML is also used to insert pictures, videos, audio files and other web files to a web page. It is also used to divide a web page in to different sections like like the header area, the navigation area (where the home page , contact , about us and other web page links are displayed), the side bar areas, the content and the footer area.
When you visit most websites, you often see things like registration/comment forms, search bar, tables, links, submit/buy/download buttons. All those things are called web properties. They were created using the HTML language. Again when you look at most webpages you also notice that the texts have been properly formatted i.e. the headings, sub headings, paragraphs of the texts in web pages are well organised just like those found in books. The HTML language also helps to format text so that it can appear in a browser in a readable manner. A web page is also divided in to various sections like the header area, the navigation area (where the home page , contact , about us and other web page links are displayed), the side bar areas, the content and the footer area.
HTML is the web programming language that web browsers understand. Web designers use it to instruct web browsers to display web properties like forms, texts, links, tables, search box, pictures, videos and other elements on your screen.
Just like we (humans) use human programming languages like English, French, Spanish, German etc to pass instructions to other humans and make them perform a particular task, Web programmers also use the HTML language to provide instructions to a browser and make it display all those things you often see on your screen when a webpage loads. Just like the movie directors who direct movies often provide scripts (a series of instructions) written in a particular language to their actors and actresses. Because their actors and actresses understand the language, they often act accordingly in order to produce the actions we see on our TV screen. Similarly, web programmers also use the HTML language to instruct our browsers to display those properties you often see and interact with in a website. Unlike English and other human language, HTML is not human friendly. It looks like a bunch of code (that often look scary to many would be web designers). Thats the language that a web browser understands.
For example the HTML script below simply instructs a web browser to display a link to the web page titled what is a webpage? found in the solowayne.blogspot.com website.
<a href=”http://solowayne.blogspot.com/what-is-a-web-page/”>what is a webpage?</a>
Once a web browser receives the above scripts it will immediately display the link below on your screen.
Any where your web browser sees the above code, it will immediately interprete it and display it in a human friendly manner i.e. what is a web page? on your screen.
HTML is the most essential and also the easiest computer language to learn. It,s very easy to learn because it is a mark up language. A mark up language is a computer language in which scripts are written by enclosing plaintext with puntuation marks and adding few HTML attributes (HTML jargons).
For example in the HTML script below was created just by enclosing plaintext like http://solowayne.blogspot.com/what-is-a-web-page and what is a web page? between puntuation marks like “plain text” <a> </a> and adding this HTML attribute href=
<a href=”http://solowayne.blogspot.com/what-is-a-web-page/”>what is a webpage?</a>
Those puntuation marks that are used to write an HTML script are called HTML elements while the words (technical jargons) that are added to the quotation marks to form an HTML script are called HTML attributes. For example the HTML jargon href found in the script above is an example of an HTML element.
So to learn how to create web pages using HTML……..
- First!!! You will need to start by learning all the Available HTML Puntuation marks and HTML attributes (HTML jargons) used in the HTML language and….
- Also learn the HTML syntax (how those HTML Puntuation marks and HTML attributes are used to create an HTML script). Just like English language or any other human language, the computer languages also have rules that determines the order in which scripts are written. For example by mastering all the words (english jargons) and puntuation marks in the English language won,t make you an English literate. You will also need to learn how those English words and punctuation marks are put together to form a sentence (script) understandable to humans.
If you are interested in mastering HTML today and start designing websites, i will recommend that you buy the HTML and CSS book by Jon Duckett from Amazon. Its the best book that has been written on the subject.
HTML scripts are written in text editor (such as Notepad, which comes with Windows, or TextEdit, which comes with Macs). After you have written your HTML scripts in your text editor, you will need save it in a folder in your computer in HTML format.
Documents saved in HTML format always have the .html extension in their file name as in about.html or contact.html.When you’re looking at a webpage, you can see the name of the page’s HTML document in the browser’s address bar.
Each HTML document is displayed on a browser as a web page. In otherwords what we call web page; is an HTML text document that contains scripts written in HTML language (a web programming language). Each HTML document creates a single webpage in the browser. If a site has a hundred pages, it has a hundred HTML documents. The scripts in the HTML document instructs the browser to display the things you usually see on your screen when a web page loads.
When the URL shown above is entered in to the address bar of your web browser, the
browser loads the HTML document “howtocreateawebpage.html”, and that page is assembled in the browser and displayed on the user’s screen.
Each HTML documents (web page) file on a site is given a unique name and the name of every HTML document (web page file) is often displayed in the address bar of a web browser.
There’s one HTML file name you usually won’t see in the browser’s address bar,
index.html. That’s the name of the page that loads by default when no HTML
document is specified. It’s the site’s home page. So if you enter this in the browser’s
…the document that loads (with some exceptions) is index.html.
All the HTML documents for a site are stored on the web hosts’s server, or, in the
case of a big, important site, often on the site owner’s own server.
When the browser is pointed to a page on the site, the browser fetches the appropriate HTML file from the server and displays that page on your screen.
How web pages are published on the World Wide Web (internet).
Like i said before, HTML documents (web pages) are created using text editors. Once you have successfully written your HTML scripts in your text editor, you will need to save it in HTML format in a folder in your PC. After it has been saved, you can then view the HTML document in your browser by clicking on it. However only you alone will be able to view the web page. This is because you haven,t uploaded the HTML document (web page files) to a webserver.
After you have created a web page you will need to upload (FTP) it from your computer to a webserver so that people all over the world can view the content of the web page in their browsers. If 1000 people want to look at your web page, they won’t come to your home or office to do it, so you need to have a place where your web pages and web files are “hosted” so that all 1000 people can look at it at the same time in their browsers. Webservers are special computers that store and connect web contents like HTML documents, pictures, videos, audio files and other web files to the World Wide Web for public access. You can read more about web servers and their functions here—> What is a web server?.
Ok after you have fully mastered the HTML language, you will also need to learn the CSS programming language.
