Many people often subscribe for a daily. weekly or monthly internet data bundle and just within few minutes of browsing they recieve a message from MTN that their MTN data is finish. This is because they don,t know how to manage their MTN data bundles.
Infact while i was still writing this article, my junior sister came to me to complain about her mobile internet connection. She said (in pidgin) MTN na thief people now now so way i just subscribe for 1 day internet connection, they di tell me say my internet connection don finish. Finish how?.
After asking her some few questions, i noticed that she didn,t manage her MTN data bundle well. Each of the data volume that MTN offers for each of the MTN internet data bundles, is sufficient enough to last through out the validity period i.e. if only you manage your Internet data well.
Internet savvy people like us, can use a 500mb internet data for a whole year because we know how to manage our MTN internet bundle. Enough of all this talking talking talking, let gets down to bizness.
What you need to do to manage your MTN internet bundle.
These are the things you need to do in order to manage your MTN data bundle.
Download the Opera mini browser
The first thing you need to do if you really wish to manage your MTN data bundle, is to download the Opera mini browser app. You can download it from the Google Play Store. Opera mini is the most economical mobile phone browser. It,s economical because the Opera mini browser always compresses the web files on a website before you can view the website. It should be noted that every website is made up of files like pictures, videos, text etc and those files are stored on the web server of the web host.
To view a website on your mobile phone, the opera mini browser first has to download those web files from the webserver, compress them so that it doesn,t cost you alot of data to view a website. So if the total capacity (file size) of the web files on a website is 2mb, the opera mini browser will compress those web files so that it can cost you just 500kb data or even less to view the website. Other mobile browsers don,t do that.
In addition to that, you can further reduce the total file size of a website by reducing the quality of the images in websites. By reducing the quality of images from high (the default state) to low, you will further reduce the data volume of a website and your data cost. You can also change the settings of your Opera mini browser to prevent it from displaying images and just text only. If you do that, you will further reduce your data cost.
The Opera mini browser is the best browser for the people who often subscribe for the daily 50mb internet data bundle. It will help them to ecomomise their data and make it last till the validity period of the bundle elapses.
2. Aviod browsing heavy websites
Heavy websites are websites with lots of images, videos and animations. Heavy websites like YouTube and the likes, consume lots of internet data. A website full of text like this one, won,t cost you lots of data.
It should be noted that your internet data is like your internet credit and each website is just like a person (a friend) you will be dialing with your internet credit (internet data). Each time you visit a website, your MTN data reduces depending on the total file size of the webfiles on the website. The heavy website will cost you lots of data. So aviod browsing heavy websites especially when your data volume is too small.
3. Aviod streaming videos and music online
Nothing easily depletes internet data more than video and music streaming. Simply put, aviod playing videos and music online. It should be noted that whenever you are playing a video online, your browser is also simultaneously downloading the video file from the web server hosting it (behind the scene incidentally). Streaming is the same as downloading. Like i told you before, video files are extremely large. Just a 5 minutes YouTube Video will cost you 30MB to completely watch (stream). So if you subscribed to a 1 day 50mb MTN data bundle, you will be left with just 20MB after watching a 5 minute YouTube video. Take note that the longer the duration of a video, the larger its file size and the more data it will cost you to completely play the video. For example it may cost you more than 300mb data to watch a 1 hour. 30 minutes movie at YouTube.
Due to the fact that Video and music streaming consume lots of Internet data, MTN Cameroon has specifically created a streaming bundle so that the MTN clients who always love watching Youtube Videos can subscribe to. Dial *157*4*1# to subscribe to the Streaming MTN data bundle.
4. Always check the sizes of files before you download.
There are some people who go about downloading files from the internet without even checking the sizes of those files. Such people always end up depleting their internet data very quickly. If you are one of those people, listen carefully!!. Before you download any file from a website, always check the data balance of your data bundle to make sure that you have enough internet data to download the file. With a 50mb data volume, you won,t be able to download files larger than 50mb. For example if you try to download a 60mb music or video file from a website, you won,t be able to complete the download and so you will end up wasting your data volume.
Just as you always check your airtime credit balance to make sure that you have enough airtime credit before making a call, you should always check your internet data balance to make sure that you have enough data (internet credit) before downloading any file. Always Dial *157*99# to check your MTN data balance .
5. Set a data limit on your mobile phone.
Almost every Android powered smartphone has a feature that makes it possible for you to set a data limit for your internet connection. This data limit feature will prevent you from exceeding (going over) the allocated data volume of your MTN data bundle which will eventually lead to the depletion of your airtime credit.
Most of the time MTN often notifies us that our data volume is about to finish and that we should resubscribed to an internet bundle if we want to continue browsing before our current bundle is over.
Sometimes these warning messages comes after we have already exceeded our allocated data volume and they have already started billing us per airtime. Sometimes they don,t even send us any notification message and we only notice that our mtn data is over after we notice that our internet connection has stopped working and they have also used up all the airtime credit on our phone.
It should be noted that when you exceed the allocated data volume for any of the MTN data bundles, MTN will automatically start charging you per airtime i.e. 024kb/1F. Its very expensive to browse outside a data bundle i.e. per airtime. So many people have wasted lots of airtime credit because they exceeded their data volume and MTN automatically started charging them per airtime.
Nowadays (in this android generation) you don,t have to wait for any notification message from MTN. You can set the limit of your data volume usage on your Android smartphone. For example after subcribing to a 50mb daily bundle, to prevent yourself from exceeding the 50mb data volume, you can set a limit for the bundle. If you set a 49 mb data usage limit (threshold) for the bundle, your internet connection will automatically pause and your data connection switch off/disabled after you have used up to 49mb of your data volume to prevent you from exceeding your allocated data volume and getting billed per airtime i.e. 024k/1F. . So by setting the limit of your MTN data Bundles, you will never exceed your allocated data volume and getting billed per airtime i.e. 024k/1F.
6. Always Check the data balance of your MTN data bundle.
Like i told you before, your MTN data volume, is just like your internet credit. Just as you always check your airtime credit balance before and after making a call, also constantly check your data balance. By constantly monitoring your internet data balance you will be able to manage your MTN data bundle and you will never exceed your allocated internet data volume. To check your MTN data balance dial *157*99#. Save that MTN data check code on your mobile phone.
7. Always disable apps that automatically updates itself.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes your internet data reduces even without you browsing the web?. This is because there are some apps that automatically update themselves from time to time (behind the scene). If you disable such apps, you will be able to save lots of internet data. Weather apps, daily news apps, horoscope apps etc are some example of apps the automatically updates behind the scene and consume lots of internet data.
